Steven Hartman

Steve Hartman has been member of the California Native Plant Society since 1974, served on the CNPS State Board of Directors as Treasurer for over a decade, and was honored as a CNPS Fellow.

Steve is a long-time activist of the Los Angeles / Santa Monica Mountains chapter having served as chapter president, treasurer, newsletter editor, web-master, and plant sale co-chair.

His local project is the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Area (www.sepulvedabasinwildlife.org), in the San Fernando Valley, where he has guided revegetation projects and has encouraged the City of Los Angeles to develop large-scale native landscaping projects.

He served on the Bureau of Land Management’s California Desert District Advisory Council for five years representing CNPS.

He is also the treasurer of the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants, Inc., in Sun Valley (www.theodorepayne.org). Steve is a multimedia producer and has produced a series of iPhone wildflower field guides (www.hartmanmultimedia.com).

Steve leads natural history hikes and gives presentations about native gardening, desert flora, and conservation. For fun, Steve plays music and drums for the rock and roll band “The Screaming Clams.”

Janis Huggins

Janis is a botanist and naturalist in the Aspen/Snowmass area, and has spent more than 40 years exploring Colorado’s high country.

Her field guide, Wild at Heart, won the Colorado Book Award for non-fiction in 2005.

Besides traveling the Rockies writing and photographing wildflowers, she guides and teaches for Aspen’s Center for Environmental Studies, has worked for ten years as a field botanist for the Colorado Natural Heritage Program at Colorado State University, and has also taught alpine skiing and windsurfing.

She received a B.S. in Natural Sciences with an emphasis in Botany from the University Without Walls at Loretto Heights College (Denver) in 1981, where she was chosen Student of the Year.

Janis also studied at the University of Denver, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and the Biological Station at Flathead Lake in Montana, and holds a degree in Clinical Herbal Therapy.

her goal in life is to help people see the landscape “through new eyes,” to cherish the fascinating species with which we share our surroundings, and to seek new ways to secure the future of those species as they are a part of the matrix that enriches life.

Wildflowers of the Northern Rocky Mountains

This area includes 3 major National Parks (Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Glacier/Waterton), plus a host of mountain ranges – from the Wasatch and Uintas of Northern Utah to the Canadian border.

William Gray

Bill Gray grew up in England and earned his doctorate in Molecular Biology from Cambridge University. He came to the US in 1964 for 1 year or maybe 2, fell in love with the mountains and deserts – and has been here ever since!

After retiring from the University of Utah he has traveled extensively in the Western States photographing plants in their native habitats. He leads many wildflower walks and has published an interactive CD guide to plants of the Central Wasatch Range of Utah. He is a Past President of the Utah Native Plant Society.

Randall Babb

Randy Babb is a biologist and an Arizona native. He is currently employed by Arizona Game and Fish Department.

He has worked on numerous studies and projects in Arizona, New Mexico, southeastern U.S., Mexico, Central America, Vietnam, and southern Africa on small mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians.
