Raptors of Eastern North America

Kevin Karlson

Kevin Karlson is an accomplished birder, professional tour leader and wildlife photographer who has published numerous articles on bird identification and natural history for an assortment of magazines, books, and journals.A former photo editor for North American Birds, he currently writes the Birder’s ID column for Wild Bird Magazine. Kevin is a co-author of The Shorebird Guide (Houghton Mifflin Co. 2006) and is currently completing a new book for the Roger Tory Peterson Reference series at Houghton Mifflin Co. called Birding by Impression. He is the author and photographer of a book titled The Birds of Cape May (Schiffer Publishing, 2010), which celebrates the birds of this special location through the four seasons, and just completed a new nature photography book called Visions: Earth’s Elements in Bird and Nature Photography, which will be released in June, 2012.

As the sole ornithologist for Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s DVD Birds of North America, Kevin prepared photos and wrote captions for over 2600 bird images, including over 800 of his own. He is a regular presence at numerous Bird and Nature festivals around North America, where he gives keynote presentations and workshops on bird identification and natural history, and leads field trips to a variety of locations. Greg Homel

Greg R. Homel is an ornithologist, award-winning international nature photojournalist, documentary film producer, birding tour leader and lecturer.

He lives and works from his home within the magnificent Los Padres National Forest, California, USA (home of the California Condor) and from his second homes at Río Lagartos, surrounded by the magnificent Ría Lagartos National Park and Biosphere Reserve at the north tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and El Tuito, near Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico.

A birder-naturalist since childhood, Greg founded Natural Elements Productions in 1986 and Natural Encounters Birding Tours shortly thereafter. Now he travels the globe on a full-time basis in search of rare and little-known birds and other wildlife.

He shares his unbounded (and contagious) enthusiasm through excursions for small groups worldwide, and with a wider audience through state-of-the-art digital lectures, television, and wide variety of publications and video productions.

Throughout his life, but especially since the early 1990s, Greg has guided, educated, and inspired travelers in over 80 countries throughout the world. His travels on all seven continents, from the Arctic Circle to the Antarctic and points between, have allowed him to see more than half of the planet’s roughly 9,800+ bird species in their natural habitats.

His early work appeared regularly in books and magazines, including Wildbird Magazine, The Audubon Society Field Guides to Eastern Birds and The Audubon Society Field Guides to Western Birds, Time, Birder’s World, Tucson Lifestyle, and Texas Monthly magazines.

Tyler Nordgren & Chad Moore

Tyler Nordgren is an astronomer living in Ithaca NY. He earned a PhD in astronomy from Cornell University in 1997 for work on dark matter and has been an astronomer at Lowell Observatory and the U.S. Naval Observatory, as well as a former Full Professor at the University of Redlands in California.

In addition to publishing roughly two dozen peer reviewed scientific articles he is also the author of “Stars Above, Earth Below: A guide to astronomy in the national parks,” a popular science book dedicated to revealing what visitors to America’s national parks can observe in a dark night sky.

Since 2007, Dr. Nordgren has worked closely with the U.S. National Park Service Night Sky Program to promote astronomy outreach and night-sky preservation in national parks.

Dr. Nordgren has helped document this vanishing landscape with award-winning artwork and night sky photography that is on sale many national parks. As a result of this work he was awarded the International Dark-Sky Association’s Dark Sky Defender Award in 2020.

His artwork has also been collected by the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, been displayed at the White House, and even sits on the surface of Mars onboard the Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity Mars rovers.

Chad Moore holds degrees in Geography and Earth Science and has a longtime interest in the beauty and science of the night sky.

Mr. Moore co-founded the U.S. National Park Service Night Skies Program in 1999 and led that team through 2014. This team of scientists, naturalists, and educators developed methods and instrumentation for measuring light pollution, sponsored several outdoor lighting retrofits in parks, and developed policies for the cooperative protection of night skies in parks and communities. The Night Skies Program was awarded the International Dark-Sky Association’s Dark Sky Defender Award in 2013 and their work has appeared in documentary films and books.

Mr. Moore was instrumental in developing the concept of Dark Sky Parks and Dark Sky Reserves, popularizing astronomy festivals, and elevating the practice of night sky ranger programs in over a hundred national and state parks. He has served as chair of two International Dark-Sky Association committees, the Dark Sky Places committee and the Technical Committee, and remains engaged in international dark sky conservation efforts and the application of better outdoor lighting practices.

His favorite hobby is sharing the night sky with others.

Randi Boice

Randi Boice has been behind the camera her whole life, but has only been photographing cannabis since 2014. While she lacks traditional schooling past high school, she is both a self-taught software engineer (named one of the top 18 female software engineers in San Francisco by Inc.) and self-taught photographer. Her passion lies in helping the underdog.

Since her diagnosis of Lyme disease in 2006, she has been using cannabis to treat its symptoms, having found that the side effects of the medication prescribed was worse than what it was meant to fix. Cannabis made it possible for her to live a somewhat normal life with chronic Lyme disease and she wanted to find a way to give back.

She goes by the mantra “See a need, fill a need” and she saw a need in helping to reverse the negative image around the cannabis plant that helped so many. She says she wanted to beautify what others saw as dirty, and help to turn the tide of propaganda in its favor. She has taken up the lens to give back, to show the world how she sees it.
