Birds of Texas Big Bend Country

Birds of Texas Big Bend Country including Big Bend National Park and Davis Mountains is a 12-panel, folding, laminated, waterproof guide to the common and notable birds species of the Big Bend area of Texas.

The geographical area covered by the guide is far west Texas, concentrating on Big Bend and the Davis Mountains. The guide is geared toward the beginning to intermediate bird watcher or nature observer and provides some of the basic information helpful to identify the 123 species covered.

Greg Lasley

Greg first pointed a camera at a bird in 1971, a Horned Lark at Great Salt Lake, Utah, while he was in the U.S. Air Force.

By 1976, as a novice, but enthusiastic bird-watcher, he became interested in documenting appearances of rare birds by photographing and tape-recording them.

From the late 1970s until the late 1980s, most of Greg’s wildlife photography focused on documenting rarities and obtaining slides of birds to illustrate his lectures for Audubon Societies or other nature-oriented groups.

In 1983, Greg took over the editorship of the Texas Region for American Birds, later known as Field Notes, and now known as North American Birds, a publication of the American Birding Association.

Greg continued to be the Texas co-editor of that publication through the year 2000 and was the Secretary of the Texas Bird Records Committee of the Texas Ornithological Society from 1986 until 2000.

Greg also served on the Bird Records Committee of the American Birding Association for two terms, ending in 2005. Greg’s photos have been published in more than 200 different books and magazines.

Birds of North Texas

Birds of North Texas is a 12-panel, folding, laminated, waterproof guide to the common and notable birds species of north Texas, including the Dallas and Fort Worth areas, south to about Waco and west toward Wichita Falls and other nearby areas.

The guide is geared toward the beginning to intermediate bird watcher or nature observer and provides some of the basic information helpful to identify the 123 species covered.

Greg Homel

Greg R. Homel is an ornithologist, award-winning international nature photojournalist, documentary film producer, birding tour leader and lecturer.

He lives and works from his home within the magnificent Los Padres National Forest, California, USA (home of the California Condor) and from his second homes at Río Lagartos, surrounded by the magnificent Ría Lagartos National Park and Biosphere Reserve at the north tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and El Tuito, near Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico.

A birder-naturalist since childhood, Greg founded Natural Elements Productions in 1986 and Natural Encounters Birding Tours shortly thereafter. Now he travels the globe on a full-time basis in search of rare and little-known birds and other wildlife.

He shares his unbounded (and contagious) enthusiasm through excursions for small groups worldwide, and with a wider audience through state-of-the-art digital lectures, television, and wide variety of publications and video productions.

Throughout his life, but especially since the early 1990s, Greg has guided, educated, and inspired travelers in over 80 countries throughout the world. His travels on all seven continents, from the Arctic Circle to the Antarctic and points between, have allowed him to see more than half of the planet’s roughly 9,800+ bird species in their natural habitats.

His early work appeared regularly in books and magazines, including Wildbird Magazine, The Audubon Society Field Guides to Eastern Birds and The Audubon Society Field Guides to Western Birds, Time, Birder’s World, Tucson Lifestyle, and Texas Monthly magazines.

Since the “digital revolution,” Greg has moved into television, video production for conservation groups such as American Bird Conservancy, field guide writing and lecturing aboard expedition ships with the hope of “giving a voice to his truest love, which is the natural world and its inhabitants, especially birds!”
