Greg Homel

Greg R. Homel is an ornithologist, award-winning international nature photojournalist, documentary film producer, birding tour leader and lecturer.

He lives and works from his home within the magnificent Los Padres National Forest, California, USA (home of the California Condor) and from his second homes at Río Lagartos, surrounded by the magnificent Ría Lagartos National Park and Biosphere Reserve at the north tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and El Tuito, near Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico.

A birder-naturalist since childhood, Greg founded Natural Elements Productions in 1986 and Natural Encounters Birding Tours shortly thereafter. Now he travels the globe on a full-time basis in search of rare and little-known birds and other wildlife.

He shares his unbounded (and contagious) enthusiasm through excursions for small groups worldwide, and with a wider audience through state-of-the-art digital lectures, television, and wide variety of publications and video productions.

Throughout his life, but especially since the early 1990s, Greg has guided, educated, and inspired travelers in over 80 countries throughout the world. His travels on all seven continents, from the Arctic Circle to the Antarctic and points between, have allowed him to see more than half of the planet’s roughly 9,800+ bird species in their natural habitats.

His early work appeared regularly in books and magazines, including Wildbird Magazine, The Audubon Society Field Guides to Eastern Birds and The Audubon Society Field Guides to Western Birds, Time, Birder’s World, Tucson Lifestyle, and Texas Monthly magazines.

Since the “digital revolution,” Greg has moved into television, video production for conservation groups such as American Bird Conservancy, field guide writing and lecturing aboard expedition ships with the hope of “giving a voice to his truest love, which is the natural world and its inhabitants, especially birds!”

Butterflies of Illinois

Butterflies of Illinois: The Prairie State has many interesting natural communities to explore, including rich hardwood forests, prairies, old fields, fens, bogs, marshes, swamps, and, along the shore of Lake Michigan, dune habitats. Marc Minno

Marc C. Minno has studied the ecology, systematics, and biogeography of butterflies and moths for much of his life.

He received a B.S. degree in entomology from Purdue University, a M.S. degree in entomology from the University of California at Davis, and a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Florida.

He currently works as an ecologist for Eco-Cognizant, Inc., a home based consulting firm operated by spouse Maria Minno.

Since moving to Florida in 1982, Marc and Maria Minno have worked toward conserving the state’s rare, unique, and imperiled plants and animals.

Recently, he has been monitoring imperiled butterflies in the Florida Keys and southern areas of the state.

Marc frequently gives presentations and workshops on butterflies to local chapters of the Florida Native Plant Society, North American Butterfly Association, Audubon Society, and other conservation groups.

He is a past president of the Southern Lepidopterists’ Society and in 1999 received the John Abbott Award in recognition of outstanding achievement in expanding knowledge of Lepidoptera.

Marc is a research associate with the McGuire Center at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, which contains the largest butterfly and moth research facility in the world.

Craig Springer is a biologist and writer, living in northern New Mexico.

Joseph Tomelleri graduated from Fort Hays State University (Hays, KS) in 1984 with a M.S. in biology. After working briefly as a field biologist, Joe took to illustrating fishes full time.

He has drawn scientific illustrations of more than 1000 fishes from actual specimens, most of which he has collected and photographed in the wild. His drawings have appeared in more than 750 publications.

Val Kells

Val Kells is an author and highly regarded Marine Science Illustrator whose specialty is marine and brackish water fishes. Her work is precise, highly detailed and scientifically accurate.

Val recently illustrated, designed and co-authored “A Field Guide to Coastal Fishes: from Alaska to California.” This four-and-a-half year project includes almost 700 species descriptions and over 950 illustrations of Pacific coast fishes that occur from the border of Canada to the border of Mexico. This important book is the companion to “A Field Guide to Coastal Fishes: from Maine to Texas,” which she also co-authored and designed and for which she produced 1,079 full-color illustrations. Other notable books that feature her work include “Field Guide to Fishes of the Chesapeake Bay” and the forthcoming “Tunas and Billfishes of the World.”

Val has also developed and produced thousands of full-color, black-and-white and mixed-media identification and interpretive illustrations for permanent and temporary displays at over 30 public aquariums, museums and nature centers both in the US and abroad.

Val received her degree in Environmental Science and Science Communication and Illustration from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1986. An avid fisherman and naturalist, Val loves exploring and spending time on the water with family and friends.
