John & Gloria Tveten

John & Gloria Tveten photographed and wrote about wildlife for over 35 years.

They were major winners in the 2000 Valley Land Fund Photo Contest.

They combined their photography and writing skills to produce the “Nature Trails” column in the Houston Chronicle for 24 years as well as hundreds of photo/text packages for major magazines. John passed away in 2009 but his images have been scanned and are still in circulation.

Brian Lane & Jeanne Murphy

As a Florida native, Brian grew up on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

During his childhood, he spent most of his spare time fishing along the beaches and bays of Florida’s west coast or roaming the woods looking for his next adventure.

After high school, he left Florida to become a Watercraft Operator for the US Army Reserves.

From early on, Brian was determined to find a profession that would satisfy his passion for wildlife and the outdoors. Being an environmental scientist and ecologist for the past 17 years has done just that.

With camera in tow, Brian eagerly treks through waist-high swamps, canoes around alligator tails and drives ATVs up steep banks excitedly awaiting his next nature adventure to unfurl.

Then, he brings his experiences back and shares them with others through environmental trainings, eco-tours and educational materials that he creates for his co-owned company, Sensing Nature®.

Jeanne Murphy, a professional wildlife biologist is happiest when teaching about nature through educational workshops/eco-tours, capturing moments in time through nature photography or just exploring nature at leisure.

After pursuing a bachelor degree in animal science and graduate courses in ichthyology, Jeanne has since spent years traveling and mapping wetland and upland habitats throughout the United States as well as working as a government wildlife biologist educating the public about the importance of natural systems and their inhabitants.

Now, Jeanne excitedly co-owns Sensing Nature® (a Florida environmental education, ecotourism and educational nature products company) with her husband Brian Lane.

As a certified instructor for the University of Florida’s Florida Master Naturalist Program and as an active community member, Jeanne believes that we can all make a positive difference in tomorrow’s environmental successes.

Craig Springer is a biologist and writer, living in northern New Mexico.

Joseph Tomelleri graduated from Fort Hays State University (Hays, KS) in 1984 with a M.S. in biology. After working briefly as a field biologist, Joe took to illustrating fishes full time.

He has drawn scientific illustrations of more than 1000 fishes from actual specimens, most of which he has collected and photographed in the wild. His drawings have appeared in more than 750 publications.

Diane Peebles

Diane grew up in Louisiana and attended Tulane University where she studied biological illustration, art history and the natural sciences.

She graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Biological Illustration and moved to Florida with her husband, a marine biologist.

Because of her lifelong love of fishing, she decided to choose ichthyology as her illustration specialty. Her watercolor fish illustrations are in high demand for conservation, nature and scientific publications.

Her oil paintings have been featured on state and conservation fishing stamps, magazine covers, and books.

She continues to prioritize projects that enhance conservation of our natural resources, and supports many organizations and charities with her time and donation of artwork.

Diane currently serves as Vice President of the Florida Foundation for Responsible Angling.

Val Kells

Val Kells is an author and highly regarded Marine Science Illustrator whose specialty is marine and brackish water fishes. Her work is precise, highly detailed and scientifically accurate.

Val recently illustrated, designed and co-authored “A Field Guide to Coastal Fishes: from Alaska to California.” This four-and-a-half year project includes almost 700 species descriptions and over 950 illustrations of Pacific coast fishes that occur from the border of Canada to the border of Mexico. This important book is the companion to “A Field Guide to Coastal Fishes: from Maine to Texas,” which she also co-authored and designed and for which she produced 1,079 full-color illustrations. Other notable books that feature her work include “Field Guide to Fishes of the Chesapeake Bay” and the forthcoming “Tunas and Billfishes of the World.”

Val has also developed and produced thousands of full-color, black-and-white and mixed-media identification and interpretive illustrations for permanent and temporary displays at over 30 public aquariums, museums and nature centers both in the US and abroad.

Val received her degree in Environmental Science and Science Communication and Illustration from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1986. An avid fisherman and naturalist, Val loves exploring and spending time on the water with family and friends.
